Farewell to the Shanghai Teachers

Sadly, the two weeks that the Shanghai teachers, Hou Linyan and Huang Shuxin have spent in the UK has now come to an end.

Hou and Huang each taught 8 lessons at Outwoods Primary School for large numbers of local teachers, to demonstrate Chinese mathematics lessons and the pedagogy behind them. The Shanghai - England Mathematics Teacher Exchange is part of a 41 million pound investment by our government to improve mathematics teaching in the UK, by learning from countries that perform highly in this subject.

Mrs Preston, a mastery maths specialist with the North Mids and Peaks Maths Hub was fortunate to take part in the exchange this year and this has been rewarding for both our Federation schools and many schools in the local area.

The exchange was concluded with a gathering at the Chinese Embassy on Friday 26th January (photograph shown above). This event included speeches from both the Chinese Education Section of their government, the Department for Education and the NCETM (National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics).

This has been an amazing personal journey for Mrs Preston, but also for both our schools as we continue to drive for children to have a deeper conceptual understanding of mathematics. We hope to hold a parental workshop in the near future to share some of the principles behind teaching for mastery in mathematics. Details will follow.
